ON A 'SUND' MISSION

Health, medicine, and technology are the three main elements at the Faculty of Medicine. Our educational programmes stem from solid world-class health research and a great understanding of people, technology, and healthcare.

Educating doctors, civil engineers, and other health professionals

We educate graduates qualified from day one with an education at the highest professional level and a readiness to solve future health challenges.

We research digital and technological health solutions.

Our research takes place in an interdisciplinary interaction between the biomedical and the engineering sciences.

A close collaboration with the healthcare sector enables us to be involved in everything - from the moment there is a discovery in the laboratory to the improvement of the patient.

Examples of research at the Faculty of Medicine

Health technology listens to atherosclerosis

Imagine that you turn on a faucet and can hear the water rushing in the old calcified water pipes. It is a kind of turbulence you can hear. The same actually applies to the blood vessels. Just like with calcified water pipes, you can hear when there is calcium in the blood vessel. And we would like to discover calcification this in time, since atherosclerosis in the coronary artery is the main cause of a blood clot in the heart. This scientific discovery by AAU led in 2009 to the company Acarix and the 'blood clot alarm' CADScor. The product is currently available in Scandinavia, Germany, and Austria. Acarix was founded in a collaboration between AAU and Coloplast and is now a publicly traded company.

Better healthcare system for elderly patients

AAU is the project manager for the EU Horizon 2020 project, AFFIRMO, where researchers across Europe collaborate on developing and testing a completely new treatment concept. This research proposes that using big data and AI will make the healthcare system better equipped to handle the increasing number of elderly patients with many competing chronic diseases.

What happens in the brain when you inflict pain?

By inflicting pain on people for several days - and measuring their brain activity with advanced methods - we gain insights into how the brain changes (neuroplasticity) over time. This knowledge is necessary to understand the pain system and discover what may be needed to reduce the changes again. The research center CNAP is where this and other ground-breaking research takes place.
